Steven Gerrard has paid tribute to former Liverpool team-mate John Arne Riise following the latter’s retirement from football this week.
The 35-year-old left-back, who spent seven years at Liverpool and made 234 appearances, called time on his illustrious career on Monday, citing physical and mental exhaustion as the reason behind his decision (BBC).
Riise and Gerrard won a number of trophies together on Merseyside, including an FA Cup and a Champions League title, and the former Reds captain paid tribute with a heartwarming collage of the duo on Instagram, together with a caption.
The Los Angeles Galaxy man wrote: “Congratulations ‘Ginge ‘ on a great career and best wishes for your future . Top left back and the second hardest shot at LFC for years.”
Gerrard himself is still going but, at 36, the legendary midfielder is surely in the twilight of his career with the MLS side, following his emotional departure from Liverpool after the 2014-15 season.
