Steven Gerrard sends cryptic message after double Liverpool snub

Two Liverpool players were surprisingly omitted from a FIFA XI of the Year this week.

Two Liverpool players made the FIFPro World XI this week, but two others are surprisingly omitted.

Goalkeeper Alisson and centre-back Virgil van Dijk were the Reds’ only representatives in the team.

It’s rather surprising given that Liverpool won the Champions League for a sixth time back in June.

The likes of full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson were expected to be included, but Marcelo, Sergio Ramos and Matthijs de Ligt were the defenders who joined Van Dijk.

Fans of the Anfield club were shocked over the snub and it looks like iconic midfielder Steven Gerrard might be too.

On Tuesday, Gerrard posted two pictures on Instagram – one of Alexander-Arnold, one of Robertson – along with the caption: “We know so it doesn’t matter.”

Whatever about De Ligt, who was exceptional for Ajax in their route to the Champions League semi-final last season, but the inclusion of Ramos and Marcelo – who won nothing with Real last term – over the Liverpool pair seems particularly surprising.

But Gerrard is right in saying that Reds fans don’t need to see their boys on a list to know that they were two of the best in their position.
