Rangers have announced that Jermain Defoe has left Ibrox this afternoon.
The former England international spent three years on Rangers’ books and helped the Gers – then under Steven Gerrard – to a historic Premiership title last season.
It was the light Blues’ 55th time reigning supreme in Scotland.
Defoe scored 32 goals in 76 competitive games for the Ibrox outfit since joining from Bournemouth in 2019.
Here’s what Gerrard posted about the legendary hitman on Instagram:
Coaching
Defoe was originally expected to leave Rangers last summer, but ultimately extended his career in Scotland and even joined Gerrard’s backroom staff.
However, the 41-year-old manager quit the Gers in November in favour of joining Aston Villa in the Premier League.
And his successor, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, brought a number of his own people to Auchenhowie, making Defoe a regular player again.
It now remains to be seen whether Defoe continues his playing career elsewhere or moves into a full-time coaching position somewhere.
Having scored so many goals during his three-year spell at Rangers, the evergreen marksman might feel tempted to continue playing for now.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United attacker has also moved into punditry, having provided analysis on the Hammers’ FA Cup victory over Leeds United this past weekend.
Defoe is among Spurs’ most lethal goalscorers in the club’s modern history, netting 143 goals during two separate spells in North London.
Overall, he bagged 162 times in 496 Premier League appearances for West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Bournemouth.
