Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has told Herald Scotland that Jamie Murphy is “frustrated at the moment”.

Gerrard has suggested that he will not stand in the way of Murphy if he wants to leave Rangers in the summer transfer window.

The Rangers boss has spoken highly of the 28-year-old winger, and has praised him for his commitment in training.

Gerrard understands the competition that Murphy is facing from Ryan Kent, and the Liverpool legend has suggested that he would be open to letting the 31-year-old winger go.

Gerrard told Herald Scotland about Murphy: ”In Jamie’s case, I certainly understand where he is at. He has had a long injury, he has come back and pushed really hard and his attitude has been fantastic.

“He has shown what a quality player he is during this pre-season, he has been outstanding at times in training. But the reality is that he is competing against Ryan Kent to start in this team and we all know the form that Ryan is in at the moment. We have also got some other attacking players that can cover that position so it has been really tough for Jamie.

“We respect his position but we have to wait and see how it progresses over the next couple of days. We certainly understand that Jamie is frustrated at the moment in terms of game time on the pitch.”

Rangers exit this summer?

Murphy had injury problems last season, but the winger is fit and available for Rangers now.

However, the 31-year-old former Sheffield United and Brighton and Hove Albion winger has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Gers this season.

According to The Daily Record, Hibernian are interested in signing Murphy from Rangers this summer and are in talks with the Gers, and it would make sense for the winger to seriously consider a move to Hibs.

Meanwhile, former Scotland international striker James McFadden has urged Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos to do his best for the Gers.

McFadden told Sky Sports: “It’s time for him to pay Rangers back, whether it is for the next two, three weeks or however long it takes.

“He owes it to the players, the fans and the manager for putting faith in him and putting up with the nonsense that comes with him sometimes. I think he really needs to knuckle down and just see his time out.”
