Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has told The Daily Record that the Ibrox club can win the Scottish Premiership title even if they lose to Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic in the Old Firm derbies.

Liverpool legend Gerrard, who was appointed as the Rangers manager in the summer, believes that the Gers can win the league title this season even if they fail to pick up any point in the matches against Celtic.

Rangers will face Celtic away from home at Celtic Park in the first Old Firm derby of the season next weekend.

Gerrard told The Daily Record: “I haven’t even thought about the Old Firm game. I’m not obsessed with Celtic. I am more obsessed with being successful as the Rangers manager.

“I could lose every Old Firm game I go into and still win the league. Why should I be obsessed with them?”

Strong claim

Mathematically, Gerrard’s claim is valid. Rangers could indeed lose all four games against Celtic this season and still win the Scottish Premiership title.

However, Rangers will drop points against other sides in the division – and so will Celtic – and that is one of the many reasons why games against the Hoops are so important.

Losing against Celtic will also have an effect on the Rangers players’ confidence, and winning against the Gers will be great for the mettle of the Celtic stars.

If Rangers are to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title this season, then they have to be serious about winning the Old Firm games.
