Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has told The Scottish Sun that Filip Helander will be like a new signing.

Helander is training with his Rangers teammates, having recovered from a broken foot.

Rangers boss Gerrard is pleased to have the 27-year-old central defender back in training, and believes that the Sweden international will be an important player for the Gers next season.

Gerrard told The Scottish Sun about Helander: “Filip has come back in great shape but he still needs to get football fitness.

“He is a leader in how he goes about things and that will feel like a new signing as he was sorely missed.

“From Christmas onwards, we missed his experience and leadership. We want to improve that area and stop individual mistakes and sloppy goals. Fil will help us.”

Stats

According to WhoScored, Helander made just eight appearances in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers last season, scoring one goal in the process.

The Swedish defender – who cost the Ibrox club £3.5 million in transfer fee in the summer of 2019, as reported by The Scottish Sun – also played five times in the Europa League, and score one goal in four Scottish League Cup ties for the Gers in 2019-20, according to WhoScored.

Title race

Rangers gave Celtic a run for their money in the first half of this past season, but the Gers struggled after the mid-season winter break.

If the Gers want to stop the Hoops from making it 10 league titles in a row, then they will have to maintain consistency and will have to win against the ‘lesser’ sides.
