Jamie Murphy hasn’t played for Ibrox outfit Glasgow Rangers in over a year.
Steven Gerrard has admitted to Rangers’ official website that he might be forced to usher Jamie Murphy back into his senior plans.
The 30-year-old winger is yet to kick a ball for the Gers in any competition this season after spending virtually the entire 2018-19 campaign out of action with a knee injury.
The Rangers boss signed a number of left-sided wingers during the summer – including Jordan Jones and Ryan Kent – and it looked like the Scot was set to leave Ibrox on loan.
But injuries to both Jones and £7 million man Kent have forced Gerrard’s hand and now the former midfielder revealed to Rangers’ official website that he may turn to Murphy.
“It also might make us push Jamie Murphy forward a bit quicker to give us another option as we will be without Jordan Jones for probably another three to four weeks and it looks like Ryan is going to be a couple of weeks as well, so we might have to push Jamie a bit quicker.
“I think he is ready to be part of the 18, but I’m not sure he will be ready to go in and start games in succession.”
Murphy was brought to Rangers in January of 2018 during Mark Allen’s stint as Director of Football and then signed on a permanent basis the following summer when Gerrard replaced Graeme Murty.
Gerrard has barely got a chance to use the former Brighton winger but it looks like Jones and Kent’s loss might be his gain.
Whether he can take the chance with both hands – if he gets it – is another question entirely.
