Glasgow Rangers defender James Tavernier has been linked with moves away from Ibrox, but Gers manager Steven Gerrard suggests that he wants him to stay.
Tavernier has been on the books of Rangers since the summer of 2015 when he joined from Wigan Athletic for a transfer fee reported by The Scottish Sun to be worth £200,000.
The former Newcastle United right-back has established himself as a key figure in the current Rangers team and is one of the best in his position in the Scottish Premiership.
Tavernier has been linked with moves away from Rangers in the summer transfer window, with The Mirror claiming that Everton, Burnley and Swansea City interested in the former Newcastle defender (click here to read more).
Rangers manager Gerrard has revealed the discussion he had with Tavernier about his future.
Gerrard said about Tavernier on BT Sport 1 (07:25pm, Thursday, July 12, 2018): “Sitting down with James, the first chat with him was, ‘What do you want your future to look like?’
“And he said, ‘I am desperate to stay here.I want to be part of it, and I want to win trophies here’. And that was music to my ears.”
Staying at Rangers
Tavernier is a key player for Rangers, and Gerrard’s aforementioned comments suggest the defender will not be sold in the summer transfer window.
With Rangers aiming challenge Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season, they cannot afford to sell players like Tavernier even for big money.
