The experienced centre-back has impressed when he has played for Rangers this season.
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard spoke to reporters yesterday, ahead of his side’s cash with Hibernian tonight, and offered high words of praise for experienced defender Gareth McAuley, labelling him as a ‘natural leader’, as quoted by the club’s official Twitter account.
The 39-year-old joined the Gers on a free transfer in the summer, after his contract expired with West Brom, and he has proven to be an excellent addition for the Glasgow giants, despite not playing too regularly, making seven appearances in all competitions.
The Northern Irishman’s experience will undoubtedly be vital to Rangers’ hopes of winning the league this season.
Gerrard’s men currently sit at the top of the table, one point clear of Celtic, although they have played a game more than Brendan Rodgers’ side.
The former Liverpool and England skipper spoke to reporters yesterday, and singled out McAuley for praise, as quoted by the club’s official Twitter account:
“McAuley is naturally a leader and an organiser. I need to manage him differently due to his age and the amount of game he has played. As a young team, it is key to have that voice and leadership around the place.”
Rangers will need all of the 39-year-old’s experience against Hibs at Easter Road tonight, and a win against Neil Lennon’s men really would be a huge statement of intent from Gerrard’s side.
