Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has suggested to Sky Sports that striker Jermain Defoe has suffered a setback in his recovery from injury.

The Rangers striker suffered a hamstring injury in the build-up to the 2020-21 Scottish Premiership campaign.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United star has yet to feature for the Gers this season, and manager Gerrard has suggested that the 37-year-old will be on the sidelines for a while.

Gerrard told Sky Sports when asked how excited he was about the potential combinations at his disposal when all his forwards are fit: “Very – listen, a couple of weeks ago I felt really vulnerable because Jermain Defoe got injured.

“I was told he was going to be missing for three weeks and he has had another setback recently so he is still a little bit away.”

No worry for Rangers?

Defoe is an important player for Rangers, and while Gerrard will be disappointed not to have him available right now, there is no real worry for him.

After all, Alfredo Morelos is back in form and is banging in the goals, and Rangers also signed two new strikers in the summer transfer window.

Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten have been added to the Gers’ squad, and both the strikers have a strong reputation.

Roofe was a success during his time at Leeds United, while Itten is a Switzerland international.

Rangers have won all three of their Scottish Premiership games so far this season and look determined to stop bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic from making it 10 league titles in a row.
