Southampton midfielder Steven Davis has joined up with Rangers manager Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.
Steven Gerrard has stated that Rangers’ new signing Steven Davis has returned to the club because he is ‘experienced’, ‘knows the demands of the club’ and for his leadership qualities.
The Gers announced on their official website on Sunday that the 34-year-old has re-joined the club on loan from Southampton.
Davis’ contract at St Mary’s is due to expire in the summer as the vastly experienced midfielder has penned a six-month loan deal with the Glasgow outfit.
Earlier on Sunday, Rangers also announced on their website that one of the Premier League’s most prolific strikers, Jermain Defoe has also joined the club on loan – he penned an 18-month deal from Bournemouth.
Nonetheless, the addition of Davis is going to add some much-needed calmness and quality to Rangers midfield as they push for the title.
Liverpool legend Gerrard, who would have played against Davis when he was at Southampton and Aston Villa, explained the reasons why they opted to bring the midfielder back to the club.
“He [Davis] is vastly experienced at both club and international level,” Gerrard told the club’s official website. “[Davis] knows the club, the fans and the demands that come with wearing the Rangers jersey very well.
“He has previously captained the club and has been captain for his country and Southampton, so we welcome yet another leader into out dressing room.”
It has been over six years since Davis left Ibrox as he will now be hoping to help them lift the Scottish Premiership title.
At this moment in time, Gerrard’s side are level on points with leaders Celtic, who have a game in hand, but they did beat their Old Firm rivals 1-0 prior to the winter break.
