Rangers look set to hire Ross Wilson as their new Director of Football.

The position has been vacant at Ibrox since Mark Allen’s shock departure from the Gers last month.

Almost immediately, there was speculation about Rangers appointing the current Southampton transfer guru as his replacement, but the trail went cold – until now.

Wilson to Glasgow has been gathering pace again in recent days and, according to The Daily Mail, the light Blues are set to be successful.

But manager Steven Gerrard, who worked in conjunction with Allen on the transfer front, admits that he hasn’t heard anything about Wilson’s arrival.

He told The Glasgow Evening Times: “That [the director of football] is not my decision. I don’t know how close it is.

“I have read what has been written but I haven’t been updated on anything, whether it is two days away, three months or four months. So I have nothing to tell you on that.”

It isn’t confirmation, but it isn’t a denial either and, because he is contracted to Southampton, Gerrard was never in a million years going to say too much about it in any case.

If Rangers do get this over the line, though, it could be a class move for them.

Tam McManus, who knows Wilson from his time at Falkirk, said on Twitter this past weekend that he would be the Gers’ best-ever signing – and, going by his CV, you can see why.

Wilson is the man responsible for bringing the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama and Fraser Forster to the South Coast over the past five years and if Rangers hire somebody with this nous, it’s huge.
