Glasgow Rangers full-back Jon Flanagan has impressed the Ibrox faithful since returning to the side.

Steven Gerrard has told Rangers’ official YouTube channel that he was particularly impressed by Jon Flanagan’s performance during the Gers’ emphatic 3-0 win away at Motherwell on Sunday.

Scott Arfield bagged a hat-trick to help Rangers consolidate their position in second in the Scottish Premiership. But the Gers’ defence deserve a lot of credit for keeping a lively Well attack down to just one shot on target.

Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic were excellent at centre-back, but Flanagan also did a superb job of marshalling reported Rangers target Jake Hastie (via Evening Times). Hastie may have got the better of the 26-year-old on a couple of occasions, but the former Liverpool man recovered and produced another impressive display.

It was only the second league game that Flanagan has played following the winter break. And Gerrard suggested after the win that he was delighted with how the full-back got on considering how little he has played.

“Very pleased,” he told Rangers’ official YouTube channel. “It was a good, away solid performance. Another clean sheet. I have to mention Jon Flanagan. I thought he was excellent again today having missed so much football, so fair play to Flanno.”

It must be said that Andy Halliday has done a superb job throughout the campaign given that he is not naturally a left-back. However, on current form, it is difficult to see him or Borna Barisic regaining their place in the side if Flanagan keeps playing as he has done since returning to the team.

It had appeared that there may be questions asked about Flanagan’s future in the summer as he became the forgotten man at Ibrox. But those questions have certainly gone away after two excellent displays.
