Glasgow Rangers winger Jamie Murphy has not played for the Ibrox side since August.

Steven Gerrard has told Rangers’ official YouTube channel that Jamie Murphy is not as close to making a return for the Gers as some rumours have suggested.

Murphy has been out of action since sustaining a knee injury against Kilmarnock back in August. It was a big blow for the Gers after Murphy enjoyed such a superb loan spell with the club during the second-half of last season.

With Rangers looking to push their rivals all the way in the Scottish Premiership and go as far as they can in the Scottish Cup, Murphy’s return could provide a huge boost for Gerrard’s side if he is back before the end of the campaign.

But Gerrard has suggested that a lot of people have been getting it wrong regarding when Murphy could be ready to make his return, and insisted that the best case scenario is needed for the wide-man to come back this season.

“He’s not as close as what maybe people are saying or the rumours,” he told the club’s official YouTube channel. “At best, he might make the final few games of the season. He’ll continue with his rehab, he’s progressing really well. He’s doing well, he’s looking good.

“He seems to have got a smile back a bit because he’s outside kicking a few balls. He has been stuck in the physio room for a hell of a long time, so it’s pleasing to see him out there and progressing in his rehab but fingers crossed, we’re hoping that maybe he can be involved for the final part of the season.”

If Murphy can rediscover his previous form, he could be a real asset for the Gers in the final weeks of the campaign if he does make his return.

Daniel Candeias and Ryan Kent were outstanding on Wednesday against Kilmarnock, and have been for much of the campaign, but it would strike a real psychological blow to opposition teams if Rangers could also call upon a player of Murphy’s calibre when they need some inspiration.
