Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has told Rangers TV that he thinks new signing Calvin Bassey is going to surprise people next season.

The Gers swooped earlier this month to sign Bassey. The defender rejected a new deal at Leicester City in order to pursue first-team football elsewhere, and picked a move to Rangers.

The Daily Record claim that Bayer Leverkusen and West Ham United wanted to sign Bassey, who was valued at around £3million by Leicester.

Because Rangers are a non-English club, they only had to pay £230,000 in compensation. At around tenth of his value, Rangers will feel they have landed a bargain.

The 20-year-old has come up through the Leicester ranks, but never played in their first team. Capable of playing at left back or centre back, he now looks set to push for opportunities at Rangers.

With Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan both being released this summer, Bassey has a real chance to feature for Steven Gerrard’s side – especially with the Gers boss waxing lyrical about his new signing.

Gerrard has predicted that Bassey is going to surprise people, given that few people know his name. He added that Rangers have tracked him for a long time, and they feel is a fantastic talent.

Gerrard branded him ‘big, strong, quick and aggressive’ lauding his ability in one-on-one defensive situation and his versatility, seemingly backing him for a big future.

“Calvin is going to surprise a few people,” said Gerrard. “Not many people know the name but we have tracked him for some time. We’ve watched him a lot and he’s a fantastic talent. He’s big, strong, quick and aggressive. He’s excellent in one v one situations.”

“Calvin can play in two or three different positions and always has a smile on his face. He is your modern-day, powerful full-back. I’m looking forward to seeing how people take to him. I think when they’ve watched him quite a bit, they’ll be as excited as I am,” he added.
