Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he predicts a ‘really positive year’ for Sheyi Ojo – if he really applies himself.

The Gers beat Kilmarnock 2-1 this afternoon, as Connor Goldson’s late header saved Gerrard from seeing his side drop points away from home yet again.

Rangers didn’t quite look up to full speed, with some players still needing to settle – and one of those is wide man Ojo.

The 22-year-old winger has arrived on a season-long loan from Liverpool, and has shown some promise during the club’s Europa League qualifying campaign.

Today, Ojo struggled to really make an impact, too often having crosses and shots blocked as Rangers were often stifled by Killie.

Ojo will seemingly play a key role this year, as Daniel Candeias has left the club, and Ryan Kent won’t be returning from Liverpool for another year at Ibrox.

Now, Gerrard has praised Ojo’s display against Progres Niederkorn on Thursday, believing fans will have seen how powerful, quick and direct he is.

Gerrard is backing Ojo for a huge season in terms of goals and assists, but believes that Ojo himself is the only thing that will hold him back, believing he will only have so much success if he really wants it.

“I predict a really positive year for Ojo if he wants it and is hungry for it,” said Gerrard. “Because when he is in full flow it’s a great sight. He is so powerful and quick, he is direct, and on Thursday we saw him produce quality to put the ball across goal. He will assist goals and he has already shown he is a goal threat. When you look at Ojo and evaluate him it’s very difficult to see what will hold him back. The only thing that can hold him back himself,” he added.
