Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard explains what makes England international winger Raheem Sterling so special.

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling is one of the most promising young players in entire Europe.

The England international enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2013-14 and was a key figure in the Reds’ second-place finish in the Premier League.

Sterling’s quality and form saw him secure a place in the Three Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and he was one of the few England players who were not altogether disappointing in the South American country.

The 19-year-old has started the 2014-15 Premier League campaign brilliantly, playing a pivotal role in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Southampton at Anfield in their opening game of the season.

Sterling is expected to be vital against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium today as well, and club captain Steven Gerrard has underlined his key strengths that could unravel the Citizens’ defence.

‘He is as strong as an ox, he never gets knocked off the ball and has electric pace’, the veteran midfielder wrote in the Daily Mail. ‘The goals and assists you are seeing him produce for Liverpool are one day soon going to be coming for England. He and [Everton midfielder Ross] Barkley are prime candidates to join the 100-cap club’.

Gerrard was explaining why Sterling could go on to become a England star, but the qualities that he outlined could well help Liverpool get the better of defending Premier League champions City today.

Sterling is indeed a great promise and had loads of talent. At 19, he still has room to improve, and one suspects that under manager Brendan Rodgers he will do so.
