Rangers landed one new midfielder on deadline day by signing Amiens ace Bongani Zungu on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move.
Zungu will join Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, Steven Davis, Joe Aribo and Scott Arfield in Steven Gerrard’s engine room options, but could there yet be one more addition?
Rangers can still sign free agents, and they have been tipped to make a move for Jack Wilshere following his deadline day release from West Ham United.
Wilshere, 28, is seeking a new club after an injury-hit two years at West Ham, and it seems unlikely that he will ever be a reliable performer given his injury woes.
Still, Rangers may want a bit of extra quality, so signing Wilshere on a short-term or pay-as-you-play basis could be appealing to Gerrard.
The Press Association claim that Wilshere would be interested in listening to an offer from Gerrard, meaning it’s now up to Rangers to make their move.
Gerrard has admired Wilshere in the past, telling BBC Sport in 2013 that he thinks Wilshere was ‘so good’ at the time and would not only win 100 England caps but also become England captain.
Gerrard noted that Wilshere had quality and wanted to lead by example, whilst Wilshere named Gerrard as his role model to The Mirror in 2013 too.
The pair clearly have a mutual respect for each other, so a move would make a ton of sense for Rangers – even with Wilshere’s injury problems something of a concern.
