Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has named his all-time best XI which includes current Reds right-back Glen Johnson.
Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard was asked to name his all-time Reds XI from during his time at the club ahead of the Anfield outfit’s clash against Chelsea.
The 34-year-old is in his 17th season since making his first-team debut and having played more than 650 games for the Merseysiders, he had a number of top players to choose from.
Choosing an attacking 4-3-3 formation, here is Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool XI, as reported by the Liverpool Echo:
Goalkeeper: Pepe Reina
The Spanish international joined the Reds in 2005 and helped the club win the FA Cup in his first season. After 284 Premier League matches with the club, he fell out of favour and joined Bayern Munich last summer.
Right-back: Glen Johnson
Undoubtedly the biggest surprise is out-of-favour England international Glen Johnson. Many observers would have gone for Alvaro Arbeloa, especially given that he joined the Reds for less than half the sum paid for Johnson.
Centre-back: Sami Hyypia
The retired Finnish defender was an absolute rock at Anfield, and there is little surprise to see him included alongside the next central defender.
Centre-back: Jamie Carragher
Carragher played for the Reds for 17 years and was vice-captain for 10 years. A one-man club like Gerrard, it would be impossible for his former teammate and friend to leave him out.
Left-back: John Arne Riise
If there was anybody who could strike a ball as hard as Gerrard, it would be Riise. The Norwegian star scored some absolute belters in his time and made it into Liverpool’s all-time top 50 appearance list.
Midfield: Javier Mascherano
The Argentine was another rock for the Reds and one of Rafa Bentitez’s best buys. Unfortunately for the Argentine, he never won a trophy at Anfield.
Midfield: Steven Gerrard
Well, he had to choose himself, didn’t he? He would undoubtedly make everybody’s Liverpool XI over the past years.
Midfield: Xabi Alonso
The Spanish international was integral for the Reds’ early success under Rafa Benitez, and he is arguably up there with the best passers the Premier League has ever seen.
Striker: Luis Suarez
Aside from his behavioural problems, on the field Suarez is a defender’s nightmare. Last season he notched 31 goals in 33 Premier League games, the best ever goals to game ratio in Premier League history.
Striker: Robbie Fowler
Another Liverpool legend and one who just has to make the XI. He scored more than 120 Premier League goals for the Reds in two spells at the club.
Striker: Fernando Torres
The last player to make the XI is Spanish international Torres. He may well be an Anfield enemy nowadays due to his controversial transfer to Chelsea, but his goal scoring record in front of the Kop was phenomenal.
