Could it really happen? One of the most intriguing stories of the season has Twitter talking.

And we thought Tim Sherwood being appointed Director of Football at Swindon Town was the strangest piece of news to come out of League One this month.

Reports, such as this from BBC Sport, suggest that Steven Gerrard is in discussions with MK Dons to become their new manager, certainly causing quite a stir. After all, just two years ago, he was leading England out at a World Cup, albeit one ending in trademark humiliation. Now, he could soon be sharing a touchline with Keith Hill or Martin Allen, preparing for visits from Bristol Rovers or Gillingham.

The temptation is to wonder why a legend of the English game would drop to such a level, question why he’s not simply wandering in to a top job on reputation and experience alone.

But how can we legitimately begrudge Gerrard attempting to learn the managerial ropes in the lower leagues, even if he’s spent his career taking on Milan in the Champions League rather than Millwall at The Den? You’d struggle to find a pundit, armchair or otherwise, who hasn’t at some point lamented the lack of opportunities for young, homegrown managers.

Consequently, Gerrard’s reported willingness to start at the bottom and work his way to the top can only be commended. He could take the easy option and pass judgement on under-pressure coaches from the comfort of a BT studio but, to his credit, it looks like he’s keeping his options, and his mind, open.

And, for the most part, Twitter agrees.
