Glasgow Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor has made a fantastic start to life since returning to Ibrox.

In comments reported by the Daily Record, Steven Gerrard has suggested that Allan McGregor has been a fantastic signing for Rangers this summer and insisted that the goalkeeper almost does not need a manager.

McGregor became the Gers’ second signing of the window back in May, following Scott Arfield through the Ibrox door. And Gerrard wasted little time in making it clear that the 36-year-old was going to be his first choice for the coming campaign.

The veteran has made a brilliant start to his second spell with the Light Blues, putting in a particularly superb display during the second-leg of their Europa League qualifier with Shkupi in Macedonia.

And Gerrard was full of praise for the impact that McGregor has made since returning to the club, while he also gave credit to Jak Alnwick and Wes Foderingham for the competition that they are providing.

“Allan has been fantastic. He is like having a captain and a leader and knows what this club is all about. He doesn’t really need a manager – he manages himself,” he said, as reported by the Record.

“I have been absolutely delighted with him and the other two lads are fighting it out and pushing him.”

When Rangers’ previous season concluded and Gerrard was unveiled as the new manager, it was clear that there were a number of areas within the squad that he would need to strengthen. However, Foderingham’s spell as number one hinted that goalkeeper probably did not need to be one such area.

But now that McGregor has made a handful of appearances, it appears that the decision to sign the Scotland international and swiftly make him first-choice is going to prove to be a masterstroke from the Gers boss.
