Steven Gerrard has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur’s White Hart Lane was his favourite stadium to visit during his playing career.
The iconic Liverpool midfielder graced some of the world’s finest stadiums throughout his time as a player.
But Gerrard, who is now Aston Villa, revealed to Gary Neville’s The Overlap Show on YouTube that Tottenham away was a fixture he particularly liked.
Spurs left White Hart Lane in 2017 and beat Manchester United 3-1 in their final game on that turf, completing an unbeaten season at home in the process under Mauricio Pochettino that year.
Clearly Pochettino’s players back then loved that stadium too.
Here’s what Gerrard said about it: “I used to love White Hart Lane, the way it was filled in in the corners. I made my debut there in terms of an away game so it was always special going back there.”
No doubt that fans of the North London outfit will miss that stadium too.
Not only because the latter years of that home, Tottenham were a much better team than they are now and there’s more reason for nostalgia.
There’s no doubt that their current ground is magnificent – and given it cost £1 billion, it should.
But there’s also no denying that the quality of the overall team has declined since moving stadiums for whatever reason.
Still, Gerrard’s revelation is one that the Tottenham supporters will love – and his use of the word ‘special’ certainly enhances that.
