The Ibrox boss is hugely impressed with the Rangers striker right now.

Steven Gerrard admits despite being tempted to play Jermain Defoe, he just can’t drop Alfredo Morelos given his current form, speaking to BT Sport post-match on Sunday.

Morelos again found himself on the scoresheet for the Gers on Sunday against St Johnstone, contributing to a healthy 4-0 win.

The win helps the team keep pace with Celtic at the top of the table.

Gerrard’s outfit are undefeated in all but one match at the start of the season and the form of Morelos is a big reason why.

The Colombian looks better than ever in a Rangers shirt and the Ibrox boss believes that his current form makes him undroppable, despite the temptation to rest him.

As quoted by BT Sport, Gerrard explained: “I thought on Thursday night for the majority of the game he was unplayable. That’s the reason why I wanted to keep him in.

“It’s always tempting when you’ve got Jermain Defoe there to make the change, to try and freshen him up.

“But while he’s like this we need to keep him on the pitch because he’s such a threat. While he’s on the pitch you always know that if he keeps getting in the right places he’s going to find the back of the net.”

Hot streak

Having already scored 12 goals this season, the 23-year-old is well on his way to matching or bettering last term’s total of 30 goals in all competitions.

Domestically opposition defences, for the most part, don’t appear to be able to cope with his presence. Only Celtic have really managed to foil him since he joined in 2017.

Defoe showed with his substitute display at St Johnstone the quality he still holds at this level. Gerrard feeling he can’t play the veteran because of the Colombian’s form is a big sign of how well he is playing.

Despite not netting against Feyenoord, as Gerrard notes, Morelos was outstanding in European action too. If he can have an impressive group stage his reputation with scouts from the big five leagues will only increase.

Can he score the goals that fires the Gers towards silverware this season?
