It’s fair to say that Glenn Middleton hasn’t quite developed in the way Rangers would have hoped.
Graeme Murty pounced to sign the winger in January 2018 having worked with him at Norwich City, seeing real potential in Middleton.
The wide man showed real promise at first, and even made a big impact under Steven Gerrard bagging five goals and five assists in 28 appearances for the Rangers first team.
It all went wrong for Middleton last season though, as loan moves to Hibernian and Bradford City failed to help him regain his form and confidence.
The 20-year-old has been working away in training at Rangers this season, and was finally given a brief chance on Sunday, as he made a 35-minute cameo against Falkirk in the Scottish League Cup.
What was interesting was that Middleton came on for Borna Barisic, and played in a left back role that nobody has really seen him play before.

Now, Gerrard has admitted to Rangers News that Middleton has been impressing in training, and now thinks that he can become a left back or left wing back moving forward.
Gerrard praised his ‘strong’ performance, and whilst Calvin Bassey is Barisic’s main competition at left back, Middleton could now emerge in a new position.
“Glenn has been on loan and had injuries but he has been back within the group for four or five weeks now,” said Gerrard. “He has been working hard and playing for an opportunity. We think he can do left-back, left-wingback or left-wing and it was a strong cameo from him,” he added.
