Steven Gerrard’s Rangers will host Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup on Wednesday night.
Steven Gerrard has brutally warned his players that ‘a bit of ego’ before matches is ‘not acceptable’ at Rangers as he was referring to their goalless draw against St Johnstone over the weekend.
The Gers, who have drawn blanks in their previous two matches, will be looking to put things right when they host Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup on Wednesday night.
For their previous two matches, they have been without suspended striker Alfredo Morelos, who is now available for the midweek Killie tie.
Ahead of that match, Gerrard admitted that his team didn’t have the ‘right mentality’ leading up to their last league fixture and warned them to be much stronger in the near future.
“The week’s training heading into St Johnstone I didn’t see the team with the right mentality,” said Gerrard, as posted by the club’s official Twitter account.
“I saw a bit of ego before that match. This doesn’t happen very often, we are usually strong. I have told the players in a very honest way that is not acceptable at Rangers.”
It remains to be seen what type of reaction Gerrard’s comments will have on his players as their match against Steve Clarke’s side will arguably be their most realistic chance of lifting a trophy this term.
Celtic are currently sitting top of the tree in the Scottish Premiership and after their late winner against Killie on Sunday, they opened up an eight-point lead on their rivals.
Considering the Bhoys dominance in Scotland in recent years, it will be very difficult to overturn that lead in the final few months of the season, especially given that Brendan Rodgers side are hitting their best form at the right time.
Nonetheless, with striker Morelos set to return to action on Wednesday, Gerrard will be hoping his star man can provide them with the attacking threat they missed in their last two games.
