Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has said that James Tavernier could play against John Kennedy’s Celtic next weekend, as quoted in The Scottish Sun.

Gerrard’s Rangers will take on Celtic, now under the charge of interim-manager Kennedy until the end of the season, at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup next weekend.

Tavernier, who is the first-choice right-back at Rangers, has been on the sidelines for almost two months after picking up a knee injury in the Europa League match against Royal Antwerp, as reported in The Scottish Sun.

Rangers boss Gerrard has said that there is a chance that the 29-year-old could be back in action for the tie against Celtic.

The Scottish Sun quotes Gerrard as saying about Tavernier: “I’d say James has got an outside chance of being involved against Celtic. He is still outside in a one-vs-one capacity with the physio but he is progressing pretty well.”

Good news for Rangers, bad news for Celtic

Tavernier is one of the best right-backs in the Scottish Premiership, and him potentially being back for Rangers will enhance the Gers’ chances of winning the tie against Celtic, who have already lost the league title to their bitter Old Firm rivals.

According to WhoScored, the former Newcastle United right-back has scored 11 goals and provided nine assists in 29 Scottish Premiership matches, and scored two goals and gave one assist in seven Europa League games for the Gers this season.
