The Rangers manager has provided an update on the player he brought to Ibrox last summer.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has explained why he chose not to give left-back Borna Barisic any minutes against East Fife in the Scottish League Cup on Sunday, The Daily Record report.

Barisic has been an unused substitute, or missing completely from the match squad, in Rangers’ last four games.

Having initially been included in Gerrard’s team at the start of the campaign, it seems clear that the Gers boss has decided he isn’t quite performing at the level required.

The manager’s latest comments suggest he could be waiting a while for his opportunity too.

As quoted by The Daily Record, Gerrard said: “Borna got a chance earlier in the season, Flanno’s had a chance and Andy’s had a chance. I’ll go with whoever I think is best for the job on the day.”

Has Barisic missed his chance to impress?

The Croatian international is the only natural left-back in the squad so the fact he is being omitted in favour of Jon Flanagan and Andy Halliday is not a good sign.

Neither have particularly stood out in the 26-year-old’s absence, which is why getting no minutes against East Fife seemed notable.

Barisic started Rangers’ only match they have failed to win this season so far, a 0-0 against Progres Niederkorn. He was also part of the team that almost dropped points against Kilmarnock.

If he can’t improve from those displays and displace Flanagan or Halliday then his long-term future at Ibrox must surely be in doubt.

Having been called up to the latest Croatian international squad, someone out there still rates him, even if Gerrard appears not to right now.

With the Gers boss stating he’s had his chance, he could well have missed his big opportunity to cement his place in the position.
