Steven Gerrard has told Rangers TV that Jordan Rossiter needs to fight for his position in his first XI.

Rossiter has endured an injury-hit two years at Ibrox but is finally fit at the moment.

The 21-year-old midfielder, who played alongside Gerrard at Liverpool, has only earned three minutes of first-team football for the Gers over the past month.

Gerrard has a deluge of excellent midfielders in his ranks, including Graham Dorrans, Scott Arfield, Ryan Kent, Ovie Ejaria, Lassana Coulibaly and Ross McCrorie.

Competition is always fierce and the 38-year-old’s message to Rossiter is simple.

“Jordan is fine, he’s fit, but he needs to fight for his position,” he told Rangers TV.

“Ryan and Lassana have been performing really well and Ross McCrorie is fighting in that position.

“In midfield, more than anywhere else, we have big numbers and it will be difficult to keep the shirt.”

In terms of quality, Rossiter, who earns £10,000 per week in Glasgow [Daily Mail], is superb.

Not many players at Rangers offer what he does, and Gerrard, having been his team-mate once upon a time, will know all about his talent.

But it must be difficult psychologically, having started less than five games for Rangers over the past two years due to injury. Until he starts playing like he can, though, the road back to fitness will have been for nothing if he isn’t fighting for his place in the first XI.
