The Ibrox boss picked out Steven Davis as one of the Rangers’ top performers.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard was left impressed by the performance of midfielder Steven Davis on Sunday, speaking to club media after the match at Ibrox.

The Gers destroyed the Edinburgh visitors 6-1 in Scottish Premiership action, sending out a statement to title rivals Celtic that they can rack up big victories in the top-flight too.

Jermain Defoe scored a hat-trick, clearly the man of the match, but Gerrard was left awestruck by Davis’ display too.

The Ibrox boss reckons that the midfielder’s performance was one of the team’s best outside of the veteran striker.

He also had high praise for the other members of his central midfield three.

Speaking to club outlet Rangers TV, Gerrard said: “Steven Davis’ performance was outstanding. I think if you take Jermain’s hat-trick away he was probably our best player.

“Ryan Jack again solid, consistent.

“What a start to a career Joe Aribo has had. I think the fans have took to him, he’s took to the fans and I’m really looking forward to seeing that one blossom as well.”

Davis had a slow start on his return to Ibrox in January but after regaining peak match fitness he has been an integral member of Gerrard’s team.

He is a little more restrained in the middle of the park than his first spell at the club, which is a reality of his veteran status. He’s no longer the box-to-box midfielder that could make runs beyond the opposition defence.

Nonetheless the 34-year-old is chipping in with a bit of creativity, assisting for the first time this season yesterday. His dribble and classy cross allowed Defoe to net a typical header.

With experience of winning medals in Rangers colours, the Northern Ireland international is going to be absolutely massive over the course of this season if the Ibrox side are truly going to compete for trophies.
