Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers have an ever-improving star in James Tavernier.

Steven Gerrard has praised the evolution of Rangers defender James Tavernier, claiming that the right-back is ‘becoming an animal’.

The 26-year-old has been an ever-present figure in what’s been an exceptional start to life under Gerrard for Rangers.

The Gers, who sit top of their Europa League group after Thursday’s win over Rapid Vienna, could even face competition to keep Tavernier, following reports from The Mail that Premier League side Brighton will try and sign him in January.

Gerrard gave Tavernier the captain’s armband in the summer, but the former Wigan star has flourished under the added responsibility, scoring three and setting up two goals in seven Premiership outings for the Ibrox outfit this season.

Even under Mark Warburton – who brought him to Glasgow – Tavernier has long been a force to be reckoned with going forward, though it’s often been a different story in regards to defending.

But Gerrard says that his skipper has come on leaps and bounds in that department.

“He’s becoming an animal out of possession. And that’s where we spoke about how he could maybe improve his game,” he told The Mail.

“Going forward, he’s the best. He will create goals and he’ll score big goals – whether it’s free-kicks or penalties. He’ll contribute in the final third without a shadow of a doubt.”
