Gerrard played under Houllier for six years at Anfield
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has paid tribute to Gérard Houllier, who has passed away today at the age of 73.
It was the Frenchman who handed Gerrard his Liverpool debut in November 1998, with the 18-year-old coming on at Anfield as a late substitute against Blackburn Rovers.
Gerrard would go on to make another 12 appearances in the Liverpool midfield that season, before cementing his position as a first-team regular in the following campaign and eventually becoming a club legend.
Houllier led Liverpool to a treble in 2000/01, with Gerrard captaining the side to the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup.
Prior to his arrival at Anfield he managed the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and the French national team, and following his departure in 2006 he had spells at Lyon and Aston Villa.
Having played under Houllier for six years, Gerrard today spoke of his sadness at the passing of his former manager.
In a post on Instagram, Gerrard said: “Devastated 💔 to hear the news my former manager Gerard Houllier has passed away .
“I will never forget what this man did for me and my career . Rest in peace Boss ❤️ YNWA x”.
Houllier won six trophies during his time at Anfield, and in 2003 received an honorary OBE for services to British football.
