Former Rangers defender Jon Flanagan has signed for Danish side HB Koge on a two-year deal, 12 months after leaving Ibrox, and a glowing reference from Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard – via former Liverpool star Daniel Agger – helped the full-back land the move.
Flanagan had been on trial with Doncaster after leaving Belgian side Charleroi without playing a single game before surprisingly signing for the Danish second-tier side.
Club director Per Rud told the Danes’ website how Agger got “really good references” from Flanagan’s former boss at Rangers, with Gerrard having also played alongside him at Liverpool, saying: “Jon is a fast, physically strong and hard-working full-back who comes with lots of experience from Liverpool and Rangers, among others.
“We are of course aware that Jon Flanagan has not played that much in the last year, but he is in good shape, and Daniel Agger has, among other things, obtained really good references on him from Steven Gerrard in Rangers.”
Flanagan made 39 appearances for Rangers over his two seasons at Ibrox, often winning praise for Gerrard for his no-nonsense style but was allowed to leave when his contract ended last summer.
The former Liverpool defender is the second ex-Ger to head to Denmark recently, with Peter Lovenkrands also heading across the North Sea to return to his homeland and take his first senior role in management.
After his disastrous spell in Belgium, Flanagan will be hoping he can kickstart his career in Denmark and show why his old Rangers boss was right to give him a glowing referral.
