Former Liverpool skipper and current Rangers boss Steven Gerrard spoke to Sky Sports about his Liverpool departure and the possibility of playing under Jurgen Klopp.

Gerrard, who is still idolised by the red part of Merseyside, left Liverpool in the summer of 2015. The former Three Lions skipper moved to LA Galaxy and has taken up management since hanging up his boots back in 2017. Gerrard is now in charge of Scottish side Rangers who are top of the table, two points above defending champions and fierce rivals Celtic.

Another team who are top of their league is Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp has completely transformed this Reds side since he took over back in 2015, just three months after Gerrard decided to move on. The Champions League win last season is a fine example of how far Liverpool have come since Gerrard left the club when they finished sixth.

Gerrard was asked by Sky Sports if he would have liked to play under Klopp to which he said: “I always had little thoughts as I’ve gone along.

“Should I have stayed at Liverpool? Should I have signed a year extension? Maybe I might have been able to have that cameo under Jurgen Klopp as maybe a squad player.”

A player of Gerrard’s quality, even as a substitute in most games, would have been brilliant for Liverpool fans as well as the legendary number eight himself. However, he is in a good place in his career now with Rangers who could crush the dreams of many Celtic fans if they manage to beat them for the title come the end of the season.

“These things always cross my mind but, look, I made decisions.

“I am very proud of my Liverpool career, I am very proud of where I am up to now in my management. I want to give that my full focus and keep trying to learn and grow and improve and see where that journey takes me now.”
