Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has hit back at headlines suggesting he is confident of winning the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers Manager Steven Gerrard looks on during the pre season friendly match between Rangers and Oxford United at Ibrox Stadium on July 07, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Speaking to Rangers.co.uk, Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard has refuted Wednesday morning headlines that he is convinced Rangers can win the Scottish Premiership.

The Daily Record had earlier ran quotes from commentator and pundit Andy Gray claiming that he had spoken to Gerrard in the wake of Sunday’s impressive 4-0 win over Ligue 1 outfit Marseille.

Gray said that Gerrard was convinced his side had “a title in them” but the Liverpool icon has moved quickly to take a more humble view of proceedings.

Clearly not impressed, the Gers manager told Rangers.co.uk: “I haven’t been misquoted because I haven’t said anything in terms of winning the league so I categorically deny anyone who claims that I am saying we are going to win the league. I think that would be very naive and stupid from my behalf.”

Most players and managers prefer to do their talking on the pitch, with predictions and assurances often finding a way to come back and embarrass outspoken personalities in an unpredictable sport such as football.

Gerrard will know better than anyone there is a long way to go for Rangers yet, despite promising signs for the club this summer in pre-season.

The last thing he’ll want is a sense of complacency within his squad or too much pressure and expectation from outside the dressing room.

If the Ibrox side start to pick up consistent results in competitive action then there will naturally be a bit of hype, but it’s on Gerrard and his squad to prove they can do that this season and truly challenge Celtic across all three domestic competitions.
