Fans of Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers should love the subtext in Steven Gerrard’s latest comments.
Steven Gerrard announced via Rangers TV on Friday that James Tavernier would be the club’s new captain for the 2018-19 campaign.
The English defender is set to take the armband from Lee Wallace and Rangers fans should love Gerrard’s decision.
Not strictly because Tavernier is a firm fan favourite among the Ibrox faithful, but because it indicates that the new manager has no intention of selling the brilliant right-back.
Earlier this summer, The Scottish Sun claimed that Crystal Palace were lining up a £3.5 million bid for the Gers star, who was perhaps the Premiership club’s best and most consistent performer last term.
The trail has gone rather cold since and Gerrard’s decision to give him the captaincy should end the speculation once and for all.
Would the former Liverpool skipper really trust Tavernier with such a responsibility unless he felt that he was completely committed to the cause? Probably not.
Rangers fans still have to worry about some players leaving – like, say, Josh Windass and Alfredo Morelos – but it looks very unlikely now that Tavernier will be going anywhere.
