Celtic legend David Provan has written in The Scottish Sun that leaving Ibrox club Rangers for Aston Villa is not a step-down for Steven Gerrard.
The former Celtic star has pointed at the fact that Villa are a rich club who could buy the entire Rangers team if they wanted.
Liverpool legend Gerrard recently left Rangers for Villa.
The Englishman guided Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title last season.
What David Provan has said
Sky Sports pundit Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun: “Spare me the drivel that this is a step down for the former Liverpool captain. Some people would have us believe Villa are small-time compared to the Ibrox club.
“Tell you what, if the Midlands outfit are inferior to Gers they’re hiding it well. Could Rangers have shelled out £38million for Emiliano Buendia in the last transfer window?
Despite finishing 11th last season in the Premier League, Villa made £122m in prize money. Gerrard is back in the big time.
“Having cracked his head off the financial glass ceiling at Ibrox, the sky’s the limit for him now. He could buy the entire Rangers team tomorrow if he wanted.
“You could argue his work was complete when he clinched last season’s title. He was never going to squeeze as much from his players again. Accusations of disloyalty don’t wash.”

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers exit a disappointment
Villa are a big and established club in the Premier League.
No one can dispute that.
But we cannot ignore the size of Rangers.
Rangers are one of the richest and most successful clubs on the planet.
In our view, it is disappointing that Gerrard left Rangers during a season.
Now, of course, we always knew that the former England international midfielder was going to leave Rangers.
But it would have been better for Rangers and for the fans if he had left at the end of the season.
After all, the Gers are aiming to beat Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title again this season.
