Graham Dorrans could make his return for Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers tomorrow, but would it be a gamble?

Rangers’ assistant manager Gary McAllister confirmed on Friday that Graham Dorrans could make his return on Sunday.

Steven Gerrard’s side visit Kilmarnock in their last game of the Premiership season.

And Dorrans, who hasn’t kicked a ball for Rangers since September, might be about to make his long-awaited return.

But would it be a mistake by Gerrard to play him?

Rugby Park is layered with an artificial surface, where Jamie Murphy suffered a season-ending injury back in August. Gerrard has since said that he dislike artificial pitches and called them ‘dangerous’ in February [The Irish Times].

If he doesn’t like the surface at Rugby Park then why gamble and let Dorrans make his return to action there? The light Blues’ boss could look a tad silly if he takes the risk and Dorrans – a £1.5 million signing in 2017 [The Daily Mail] – suffers another injury on the same pitch as Murphy did.

It doesn’t make sense.

Dorrans will be desperate to play again, and he might not care about the surface, such is his desire to play, but player welfare is Gerrard’s responsibility and, with the season virtually over, there’s nothing to gain from playing Dorrans.
