Steven Gerrard has been strongly linked with a move to Aston Villa, and we’ve gotten to the point where it may be worth wondering what Villa would look like under Gerrard.

The former Liverpool star has been something of a revelation at Rangers, but, as many players and managers will attest to, the Premier League is a different beast.

We don’t know how Gerrard will line-up for Villa, but there’s reason to believe that Ashley Young could play a part in whichever system he plays.

Indeed, Gerrard has previously praised Young for his versatility and no matter which formation the 41-year-old plays, there may always be a space for Young.

What’s been said?

Gerrard spoke about Young and his versatility back in 2018 while doing punditry on BT Sport.

“He’s so valuable to Mourinho because he can play in four or five positions,” Gerrard said.

“I think give him credit. He’s earned the manager’s trust because he was one you might have thought would have been moved on when Mourinho first came in.

“But he’s worked hard, knuckled down and matured.”

Could be an asset

Gerrard said that Young was so valuable to Mourinho back in 2018, and in 2021 he could be incredibly valuable for Villa.

Now, we’re not saying that Young will become one of the best players in the Premier League if Gerrard comes in, but his versatility could be incredibly useful as the new manager tries to find his feet at Villa Park.

Young can play on either flank, at full-back on the wing or at wing-back, so he lends himself to a number of different styles and if Gerrard wants to experiment at Villa, Young could be vital.
