Earlier this month, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard suggested to The Daily Record that Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier could be sold in the final days of the summer transfer window.

Gerrard suggested that although he wants to keep hold of his best players, big bids could see Rangers cash in on them.

The Liverpool legend seems to have changed his stance now, making it clear that striker Morellos and right-back Tavenier will not leave Ibrox this summer.

Gerrard told The Daily Record: “None of my best players are going. I haven’t had any assurance. I’ve just said the decision myself.”

Effect of Europa League progress?

Rangers booked their place in the group stage of the Europa League on Thursday evening, and perhaps that has played a role in manager Gerrard changing his stance.

After all, with the Ibrox club now set to play in the Europa League group stage, they need a big squad.

Moreover, Rangers do not need to sell their best players due to the Europa League money coming in.

Morelos and Tavernier are two of the best players in the Scottish Premiership, and Rangers need to keep hold of the striker and the right-back if they are to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title this season.
