A free agent who was linked with moves to Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Steven Gerrard’s Rangers earlier this year appears to be on trial at Newcastle United.
The Manchester Evening News claimed that West Ham and Rangers were among the frontrunners for Dion McGhee’s signature, while Vavel reported that the former Manchester United midfielder had trained with Tottenham as he sought to earn a contract.
McGhee was later touted for an overseas move but, after a period of silence, he was listed by Soccerway as being part of a Newcastle Under-23s side that lost 3-2 at Reading on Friday afternoon.
The 20-year-old signed for Manchester United at the age of six and was rising through the ranks while the respective Tottenham and West Ham managers, Jose Mourinho and David Moyes, were in charge at Old Trafford.
But it is unclear if either of Tottenham or West Ham – not to mention Rangers – have retained an interest in McGhee.

And the Newcastle boss Steve Bruce, who also has strong ties to the Red Devils having served them for nine years as a player, could now take advantage of the situation.
Would the Tottenham, West Ham and Rangers ‘target’ make a good Newcastle addition?
