Glasgow Rangers brought Steven Davis back to Ibrox during the January transfer window on an initial loan deal.
In comments reported by Herald Scotland, Steven Davis has suggested that he would love to stay at Rangers beyond this season and insisted that discussions had been held about a permanent move.
Davis returned to Ibrox in January. But while many expected his move to be a permanent one as his Southampton contract ran into its final months, it was actually announced that he had joined the Gers on loan until the summer.
It has not been an easy spell for the Northern Ireland international, who has taken his time to break into Steven Gerrard’s starting lineup. But some of his more recent performances have been better, and he goes into the Old Firm game today off the back of a very good international break with his country.
His form has certainly given reason for encouragement for the rest of his spell and what may come after it. And while discussing his future, he insisted that he did not want his second spell with Rangers to end in a couple of months.
“We’ve spoken and we’ll see what happens between now and the end of the season, then take it from there,” he said, as reported by Herald Scotland.
“I’d like to be here [next season]. I came here to try and win some silverware this season. The cup competitions have gone and now only the league is left with a big gap between us, so it’s going to be difficult. But, of course, we want to bring the good times back.
“I’ve enjoyed being back. I’m a little frustrated about many not making the impact I feel I should be and not getting the game time. But hopefully with getting three ninety minutes within the last eight days, it will take me a step closer to where I want to be.”
It is no secret that Davis is reaching the twilight of his career, but his experience means that he has the potential to be an outstanding signing for Rangers – just as David Weir was during Davis’ first spell at the club.
With the Gers boasting so many options in midfield – particularly when the likes of Greg Docherty and Jordan Rossiter return from their respective loan spells in the summer – Davis perhaps needs to show more to make Rangers’ decision a simple one.
But given the quality that he can provide, perhaps Gerrard will only need to see glimpses of what Davis can do to be convinced that keeping him around will be beneficial as the Light Blues look to build on the promise that they have shown this season.
