Steven Davis suggests what Rangers should be looking for in new manager

Glasgow Rangers are still looking for their new manager, and Steven Davis has suggested some criteria for the man hoping to take the Ibrox post.

Steven Davis has told the Daily Record that it will be easier for Rangers’ next manager if they have previous experience of being attached to the Scottish Premiership side – but insisted that it is not the most important quality.

The Gers go into this international break still looking for Pedro Caixinha’s successor, having parted company with the Portuguese towards the end of last month.

With Celtic so dominant in the domestic game right now, the next appointment at Ibrox is undoubtedly crucial if the Light Blues hope to scupper their rival’s hopes of winning 10 league titles in a row. And Davis – who spent four years with the club before departing for Southampton in 2012 – has insisted that appointing someone with previous experience at Rangers would be a wise move, but it is not the most important attribute the club should consider.

“With my experience there it is definitely an added bonus if a manager has that background where they know the club because Rangers and Celtic are two clubs that are like no others,” he told the Daily Record.

“You think of the demands of both clubs, the pressure and that every single move that anyone makes is either criticised or praised.

“If you have that experience it definitely gives you a foothold there and you know how to deal with certain situations. But for me it is not the most important thing.

“The most important thing is to get a manager in there that is going to set the team up well, get the players all playing in the right method and have them well prepared and having everyone buying into making the team successful again.”

While Davis does not name a specific candidate he would like to see given the role, you would imagine that, based on his comments, he would approve of Rangers’ primary target.

According to a recent report from Sky Sports, Derek McInnes currently tops the Gers’ shortlist, and, like Davis, he spent a number of years on Rangers’ books, so it would not be a surprise if he was not overawed by the job if he did end up being appointed.

Meanwhile, Davis’ comments may be a boost for Graeme Murty’s case also. The current caretaker has done extremely well with the first-team when required, and has shown that he is aware just how big a job he would be taking on if he got the gig permanently.
