Newcastle are closing in on their fourth signing of the summer.
Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on the signing of Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar for a bargain fee of just £3million – and former Toon defender Steven Caldwell is delighted with imminent capture.
The Chronicle claim Rafa Benitez is hoping to have completed the signing of the 26-year-old defender in time for Newcastle’s trip to Portugal, after activating the £3million clause in Schar’s contract.
It has been reported that Schar would be allowed to leave Deportivo for the bargain fee if the club suffered relegation from La Liga, which they did by finishing in 18th place in Spain’s top division.
Now, Schar is expected to join Newcastle very soon and Caldwell, who came through the ranks at Newcastle and even played for the senior side 37 times, posted his delight by Tweeting: “what a signing”.
A 42-time Switzerland international, Schar has already played in three separate countries after spells with Basel in his home country, Hoffenheim in Germany and Deportivo in Spain. Now he is set to make that four with Newcastle.
Newcastle have been on the lookout for a new defender after selling Chancel Mbemba to FC Porto for a fee believes to be in the region of £5.5million. Matz Sels is also reportedly closing in on a move to French side Strasbourg.
Schar is expected to become Newcastle’s fourth signing of the summer, joining Kenedy, Martin Dubravka and Ki Sung-Yeung.
