Steven Bergwijn was the difference maker on Wednesday night, as he scored an injury-time brace with seconds left to beat Leicester 3-2. The Tottenham star shared what Antonio Conte has told him to do more of.
Bergwijn, 24, has endured a tricky time at Tottenham – having joined the club two years ago. Initially failing to live up to his £27million price tag, he has struggled to gather any momentum this term due to numerous injuries.
Fit again, the Netherlands international was brought on against Leicester with 10 minutes of normal time left to play. The ex-PSV man, linked with a return to his home country and Ajax, turned the game on its head.
He equalised with 10 seconds of injury time left to play, lashing home after good work from Matt Doherty. Then, inexplicably, a second came just 80 seconds later – Bergwijn rounding Kasper Schmeichel and scoring.
Speaking after the match, in which Bergwijn scored just his sixth and seventh goals in 65 matches for Spurs, the attacker shared what Conte has been telling to do behind the scenes – including being closer to Harry Kane.
“The manager told me to score goals, make difficulties for the defenders and stay close to Harry. He is a fantastic manager. We work hard. Training, physically, so we can show these things,” Bergwijn said, as per BBC Live.
As Bergwijn saves Tottenham, can Conte deliver top four?
Spurs now sit in fifth place, one point behind London rivals West Ham. But what Spurs have in their favour, is a massive three games in hand on David Moyes’ side. It is a similar story with Tottenham’s other rivals.
Arsenal are a point behind Spurs in sixth, and have played one more than Tottenham. Manchester United are level on points with Arsenal, but played two more than Spurs. Right now, you have to say, Spurs are favourites.
Another big advantage could be, being knocked out of Europe. United and West Ham remain in Europe – and are likely to go far in their respective tournaments. But Spurs do need new signings in the next few days.
