Steven Bergwijn has told Algemeen Dagblad that he thinks he made the “perfect choice” to leave Tottenham and join Ajax last summer for £26.4million – despite a poor run of form since returning from the World Cup in Qatar.

Bergwijn, 25, left Spurs after managing just eight goals in 83 games for Tottenham. Glimpses of quality, including his late brace to beat Leicester 3-2 – but ultimately, not good enough. He returned to his home country with Ajax.

Before the World Cup, Bergwijn got off to a flyer. in 21 games, he scored 11 goals and laid on three assists. But Ajax have been far from their best and since the break, Bergwijn has failed to score – creating only one goal in seven.

He failed to make the difference on Thursday night as Ajax drew 0-0 with Bundesliga high-flyers Union in the first leg of their Europa League clash. Speaking about his move to Ajax, he is still confident he made the right choice.

“I still think I made the perfect choice,” Bergwijn told AD, as per the Standard. “I’m used to it, the reviews fluctuate a lot – very black and white. I’m the best when I score a lot, otherwise I can’t do anything about it,” he continued.

It was probably the right decision to leave Spurs. Struggling to start and with the signing of Deki Kulusevski, Spurs could only afford Bergwijn a rotational spot. He was not good enough to oust Son Heung-min, or Kulusevski.

His form has proved to be up and down throughout his career. At Ajax, he now has the perfect platform to go on and shine. With Ajax struggling, he is failing to do it. So far, he looks like the kind of player that is better for his country.
