Leeds United failed to win against Newcastle United in the Championship on Friday evening.

Former Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa winger Steve Stone has been quoted as saying by Inside Futbol that Leeds United duo Kyle Bartley and Pontus Jansson were exceptional against Newcastle United.

Leeds played out 1-1 draw with Newcastle away from home at St. James’ Park in the Championship on Friday evening.

After a goalless first half, Jamaal Lascelles put the Magpies in the lead midway through the second period.

Newcastle looked set to win the match, but New Zealand international striker Chris Wood scored the equaliser for the Whites in the fifth minute of injury time.

Former Leeds winger and ex-Newcastle first team coach Stone, who is 45 years of age, was impressed with the performances of the visiting team’s centre-backs Bartley and Jansson.

“It was an unlikely equaliser because they never really got out of their own half,” Inside Futbol quotes Stone as saying.

“You probably expected Newcastle to score a second and a third when Leeds went two up front.

“They just managed to stay in the game and I’ve got to say the two centre halves, Jansson and Bartley, were exceptional.”

Leeds are fifth in the Championship table at the moment with 73 points from 42 matches, just three points above the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Newcastle currently find themselves second in the standings with 85 points from 42 matches, four points behind leaders Brighton and Hove Albion.
