Aston Villa have won just once in the Championship so far this season.
Steve Sidwell has told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 10th October, that Roberto Di Matteo was to blame for his own downfall at Aston Villa, as he failed to form a connection with the players.
Sidwell has worked with Steve Clarke in his career before, while at Chelsea, and the midfielder feels that Villa’s current caretaker boss would have been laying on good training sessions.
However, he feels that there was a disconnect between the players and Di Matteo – which was evident in the Midlands side’s results.
“Steve Clarke, I’ve worked under him, the training would have been top draw. The lads would have enjoyed working under him,” Sidwell, who played for Villa between 2008 and 2011, said.
“Di Matteo has fantastic pedigree, but there was obviously no connection there.”
Villa have won just once in the Championship so far this season, and they currently sit in 19th place in the table.
A 2-0 defeat against Preston North End ultimately cost Di Matteo his job, and Villa are now on the hunt for a new manager.
Clarke is in temporary charge as things stand, and he could take control of the Villans’ match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.
Steve Bruce is currently the odds-on favourite to land the Villa job on a permanent basis.
