Crystal Palace owner Steve Parish has lifted the lid on talks over Marc Guehi after Newcastle United’s latest bid was rejected.

Newcastle United are in the market for a centre-back and they have set their sights firmly on England international Marc Guehi.

The 24-year-old’s value soared over the summer after shining at Euro 2024 with the Three Lions.

As revealed by HITC, Newcastle have submitted four bids for Guehi, with the latest being a club-record offer worth around £65million.

However, Crystal Palace have rejected all four offers and Guehi is set to start the season with the London club. The Eagles begin their Premier League campaign against Brentford on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle were confident that their £65million bid for Guehi would be enough but it is understood they will have to raise their offer closer to £70million to get a deal over the line.

Steve Parish on Marc Guehi’s future

Parish has previously spoken about Guehi and he warned Newcastle they would have to pay “superstar money” to secure his signature.

Now on talkSPORT, he has revealed talks held with Newcastle’s sporting director Paul Mitchell.

Mitchell replaced Dan Ashworth at St James’ Park this summer after he left to join Manchester United.

“I think you’ll find with these things, people have different relationships with different clubs and you try and make it work the best way possible. Everyone is trying to do the best for their club,” Parish said.

“We’re always very respectful when we get a bid for a player. We’re very respectful of Newcastle United and Paul Mitchell is somebody I have an incredible amount of time for.

“I’ve known him for a long time, he’s been very, very good to me in football and we have a good relationship. So, he and I have had a chat about this.

“Inevitably, the agents are involved and have got a point of view, they’re decent guys.

“We’ve had conversations with other clubs that have expressed interest as well.”

Newcastle United running out of time

If Newcastle’s defensive depth wasn’t already a worry, Fabian Schar’s red card against Southampton has just made a new centre-back signing even more urgent.

That only strengthens Palace’s negotiating position, and Newcastle now face a crossroads – to stump up £70million or walk away.

Of course, Newcastle do have alternative targets if they choose to abandon their pursuit of Guehi.

HITC revealed that Newcastle assessed AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw. It is understood Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Wolfsburg’s Maxence Lacroix are also on their radar.
