Mohamed Salah may have ended his goal drought against Wolves, but Steve Nicol didn’t find much else to praise in the Egyptian’s performance.
Salah hadn’t scored in ten league matches before getting on the scoresheet during Tuesday’s 2-1 loss.
Although it was a well-taken solo effort, there wasn’t much else about his performance that stood out. Just minutes after scoring, Salah had another clear opportunity to give Liverpool the lead, and Nicol was surprised he didn’t make more of it.
Mo Salah’s Missed Opportunity vs Wolves Highlighted by Steve Nicol

That sharpness in front of goal that used to define Salah’s game feels like it’s missing right now.
His goal had a bit of luck to it, squeezing under Jose Sa, but they all count the same. However, it was the next big chance that drew criticism. With Szoboszlai and Ekitike in support during a 3v2 break, Salah couldn’t pick the right pass.
Speaking on ESPN after the match, Nicol addressed both Salah’s struggles and broader issues within Liverpool’s attack.
Nicol said: “You have to take the other step and create clear chances and score goals, particularly against the team who are bottom of the league and who are going down. It’s not acceptable to lose in the way they did to Wolves.”
“Wolves had two shots on goal. They scored two goals. And talking about going forward, in the final third, the final decision, the final pass was just horrible”, he added.
“Especially the one we showed in the highlights with Mo Salah [wasting the 3v2]. Although he scored a goal, the goalie should have saved it, and he really didn’t contribute anything again all evening”, he concluded.
Salah’s moment came with just five minutes left on the clock. In a tight match still up for grabs, his misstep stood out even more once Wolves capitalised at Anfield. The timing made it all the more painful for Liverpool fans.
Salah has been central to Liverpool since joining back in 2017-18, so moving him out isn’t a small decision – but there hasn’t been much evidence this season to suggest patience will turn things around. At 31 years old (soon turning 32), he doesn’t look like he’ll bounce back soon either.
