Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing the Bayern centre-back.

Head Coach Steve Nicol of the New England Revolution reacts during their game against the New York Red Bulls on June 10, 2011 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol discussed the potential of his former club signing Bayern Munich centre-back Jérôme Boateng, and urged the Reds to avoid a move for the Germany international, as quoted by the Mirror.

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has already addressed his side’s defensive frailties with the signing of Alisson Becker this summer and Virgil van Dijk in January, but it could be argued that they need another top class centre-back, if they are to mount a sustained challenge for major honours this season.

And Boateng could be just the man for the job.

The Merseyside outfit are interested in signing the 29-year-old Bayern star, according to a report from Sport Bild.

Nicol, though, believes that Liverpool should avoid a move for Boateng, as quoted by the Mirror:

“I am not a huge fan. The last 12 months, he has had injury problems and form problems. So right now, no.”

The former Reds ace’s assessment of the German seems to be a little harsh, and it is hard to imagine a scenario where he would not drastically improve Jürgen Klopp’s back-line at Anfield.

It is unclear as to how much money Klopp still has available to him this summer, having already splashed out £180 million, but if Liverpool are to win the league title for the first time since 1990, they will surely have to add one more face to their ranks before the transfer window slams shut.

And despite Nicol’s comments on Boateng, the Bayern ace would surely be a great addition to the Reds squad.
